Jiu-Jitsu Belt Rankings

Learn how the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu belt ranking system works.

What the Rankings Mean

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu uses a colored belt system to represent a student’s experience, technical development, and progression through the art. Most students begin at white belt before advancing through blue, purple, and brown belts on their journey toward black belt. Stripes are often added to belts to recognize progress and development within each rank.

Promotion standards can vary between academies, but advancement is typically based on factors such as technical skill, consistency in training, character, attitude, and the ability to apply techniques during live training.

For many students, earning a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is considered a long-term achievement that often takes years of dedicated practice, learning, and perseverance.
