Jiu-Jitsu Belt Rankings
Learn how the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu belt ranking system works.
What the Rankings Mean
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu uses a colored belt system to show a student’s rank and skill level. Most people start at white belt, then progress through blue, purple, and brown before earning black belt. Stripes are often added to belts to mark progress within each level.
Promotion standards can vary by school, but they typically depend on technical development, consistency in training, and performance under pressure. For most students, reaching black belt is a long-term journey that often takes around 10 years of dedicated practice.
